Using Kanopy

What is Kanopy?

Kanopy is a streaming film platform that provides access to over 26,000 films titles. Feature films, documentaries and education based films are all available through this service.

How does Kanopy work?

You can search for a film by its title, director or principle actor(s) or you can browse by collection or genre. Once you have found the film you want to view, click on the icon. The film's information page will then come up with the film in an embedded viewer. Simply press the "play" button on the viewer to begin the film. When you have finished watching, simple close the information page.

We purchase titles in Kanopy based on the number of times they are viewed. You may watch any film you wish for as long as you wish. Once a single film has been viewed 4 times for more than 30 seconds for each viewing, the library will automatically purchase the film.  Once a film has been purchased, it can be viewed an unlimited number of times during the next calendar year.  The amount of films that the library will purchase has been capped at a certain dollar amount. If that amount is reached, Kanopy may be shut down and will only provide access to those films titles we have already purchased. In the event that happens, you will be notified via this page. We ask that if you do not really wish to watch the film, that you do not start viewing it. If you accidentally start a film, please stop it within 30 seconds. That will help to ensure that service will stay active for a longer period of time.

How do I embed/share a link to a film in Blackboard?

When you find the film that you wish to use as a reserve, click on the “Share” link on its title page. You will be given a “share link” that will be the direct URL to the film’s title page in Kanopy (i.e.: There is also an “Embed” link that you can add to your Blackboard page that will allow students to view the film right in Blackboard itself (i.e.: <iframe width='700' height='580' src='' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen></iframe> ).
