Patent Databases on the Web

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • patents available from 1790; full-text searchable since 1976.  Displays as TIFF files.

Google Patents

  • searches USPTO database.  Link goes to the advanced search screen.

European Patent Office (EPO)

  • Espacenet offers free access to more than 70 million patent documents worldwide, containing information about inventions and technical developments from 1836 to today.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

  • Using PATENTSCOPE you can search 18,780,896 patent documents including 2,212,089 published international patent applications.

Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)

  • Using CIPO's Patent Database you can browse over 90 years of desciptions and images.
